Welcome to my Internet portal. My name is Stephen Adler and I've
recently installed my permanent web presence at stephenadler.org. I
hope that every citizen on this earth is lucky enough, as I am, to
be able to setup shop on the Internet like I have. As anyone who as
been using the Internet knows, this is a new medium which will change
our global society, pretty much like like the printing press did
several hundred years ago. Back then, the first leap into the
commoditization of content was taken when one could "mass produce"
books. Today, the Internet offers a new dimension or scale to
commoditization of content, so I see this the changes that are coming
much like what occurred when the printing press came online, but
different.... How it's going to be different I don't know. We have
hints of it right now with e-mail, e-commerce, e-trade, mp3 music
downloads and more. I'm sure amateur video's will be next. Something
like mp4 video movies created by students around the world, posted on
their web sites hosted by the bandwidth provided by their schools or
universities etc. Just take this web site for example. Here I am, some
joe shmoe from the north eastern part of the United States, putting up
content on the Internet for anyone on the Internet to
read. Who will actually read my content is irrelevant, what's
important is the fact that anyone can. The only barrier for someone
to get at my content is her ability to obtain a PC and plug it into
the Internet. This is a trivial barrier for people who live in the
first world, and hopefully in the near future it will be a trivial
barrier to all, but for now, there are millions of people who can
reach my site and I reach theirs, (if they bothered to put one up...)
What can I say, I've been blessed with broad band bandwidth access
into the Internet courtesy of my cable TV provider. I've measured my
bandwidth up to 5 megabits/sec in and out of my office from my
home. That's freeken 10BaseT like speeds. (Screw Verizon, and their
terrible DSL service, I'm finally rid of that monopoly.) Freedom through
bandwidth. And it is so elating! So what do I do with all this
bandwidth? Put content on the Internet. Useless content maybe, but
content none the less! My content; what ever comes into my brain, I
can throw right up onto the Internet for who ever may want to absorb,
contribute to, flame or just ignore. First I start by setting up this
site. What I'll do with it later will be up to my imagination.
What's of more importance is to get the word out as to how easy and
cheap it is to do what I've done. You have to pay for Internet access,
right? So you have to dish up $30 bucks or so month to AOL, or who
ever. Add $7 bucks a month for a hosting service and you are on your
way. Throw in another $25 bucks a year and you have your own domain
name. The neat thing is that you don't really need a static IP address
or a T1 line going into your home. If your clever enough, you can get
basically the same service of a T1 line into your home for $37 bucks a
month. That is amazing! This is Freedom! Freedom to put up lots of
content. Free to be yourself as you wish yourself to be.
Click on the site setup link over to the left under the site
index column and I'll explain in greater detail what I did. I encourage
you to follow suit, so that you can also put up your content. The more
people who can get on line like this, the more Freedom we will all
have and the greater unity this technology will provide.
OK, enough of this useless content. Get back to work. Go do something
useful like write a web page or help someone get logged onto to the
Internet. Go, scat, shoo, get on with your life....
