    I found the Chatterous application to be itenrtsnieg. I can see how teachers would be able to use if for students; for example to remind students about a test or to give some notes they weren't able to cover in class. However, if the teacher forgets to mark the chat as private, anyone can access all the students' information. Also, it may be hard for students to find the private group, once it is made. I think that e-mail would work just as easily. E-mail can be accessed by anyone at any age, is easy for communication, and doesn't give just anyone private information.
