Today alot of people use Skype, it is better then a normal phone call because you actually get to see who you are talking to. Skype can be useful to teachers who may have a student who is sick at home and unable to attend class, or if the teacher is just teaching an online class; Skype will allow the instructor a visual of their students and better enable them to answer any questions. I know that alot of families who have loved ones in the military use Skype alot to keep in touch with them.
